Directions:
Take Route 8 north to Winsted and follow Route 44 west into downtown Winsted. Turn left on Bridge St and cross over the Mad River. Just before Prospect St turn right behind a brick building down a dirt road to a small parking lot where the trail begins.
The Winsted Rail Trail follows the abandoned rail bed of the New York-New Haven & Hartford RR. Be sure to check out the STILL RIVER GREENWAY just south of Winsted.
From the parking lot; The paved trail follows the old rail bed along a narrow ledge above the Mad River. There are benches and informational signs along this short trail, as well as, old signals from the RR days. The trail heads up to Prospect St where it ends, however, turn right and travel over the Mad River via a pedestrian bridge to Route 44 and downtown Winsted. You may return the way you came or loop back to the parking lot via Route 44 and check out downtown. Use caution as there is no sidewalk along this side of the road.
