Length: Paul Simons Memorial Bike Trail; 4.7 mile loop
Difficulty: Easy. Paved trail with a few small hills..
From I-495 take exit 62 to Route 97 north. After close to 8 miles turn left on South Dr and follow to the South P-lot parking area on your left. This is a free parking lot for visitors. Parking on campus requires a fee.
The Paul Simons Memorial Bicycle Path was built in memory of Paul Simons, a former Stony Brook University student and avid cyclist. The bike path travels north from the South P-lot, then encircles the University. Four bike stations are located around the University where you may rent a bike. See; WOLF RIDE BIKE SHARE . Starting from the South P-lot; A WOLF RIDE BIKE SHARE station is located here next to the Wolf's Hut bus shelter, where you'll also find a map board. Head out the middle entrance to a cross-light over South Dr.
Note; The paved trail heading left (West) leads to Stony Brook Rd and ends.
Head right (East) along the paved Paul Simons Memorial Bicycle Path. This open trail travels alongside South Dr ascending a slight hill. Come to Marburger Dr at 0.4 miles.
Note; The paved path continues straight alongside South Dr and Health Sciences Dr for another 1.1 miles to the Stony Brook University Hospital.
Heading left the trail now winds alongside Marburger Dr before bringing you to a traffic circle at 1 mile. Here the trail will complete a full loop around the campus. Head left alongside Circle Rd traveling past the dorms. A parallel path also runs along the opposite side of the road for a bit. Cross West/Campus Dr at 1.4 miles.
Note; There are many paths that take you through the heart of campus along your right.
Again the path contains small hill sections. Pass by the LIRR STONY BROOK STATION [See; BIKES ON LIRR ]at 1.9 miles on your left. Path then continues on other side of the road as you pass by all the athletic fields. Here you've reached the northern tip of campus. You now travel south past more dorms before coming to John S. Toll Dr at 3 miles. here the path crosses over to the other side of the road just before you come to Shirley Kenny Dr and the main entrance to the campus. Just after you cross this Drive spot a memorial on your left dedicated to "Paul Simons". Next you'll pass by the Hilton Garden Inn followed by a road and tunnel on your left leading to the Stony Brook University Hospital. A slight hill leads up past the Ashley Schiff Preserve (hiking trails) and completes the Circle Rd loop at 3.7 miles as you return south alongside Marburger Dr and South Dr. Return to the South P-lot after a 4.7 mile loop.
