The Jones Beach Bikeway, also known as the Ellen Farrant Memorial Bikeway or Wantagh State Parkway Bikeway South travels south from CEDAR CREEK PARK alongside the Wantagh State Parkway to JONES BEACH STATE PARK . There it connects with the Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway which travels east alongside Ocean Parkway to Captree SP.
Jones Beach Bikeway:
Starting from Merrick Road [Cedar Creek Park]; A paved trail encircles Cedar Creek Park so you can start from Merrick Road at the parks entrance or any of the many parking lots as you enter the park.
From Merrick Road; The paved trail enters Cedar Creek Park and travels alongside the entrance road. Pass by Parking Lots 1-3 and you'll come to a bronze statue of a bicyclist on your right. To your left is Parking Lot 4 and just ahead is a restroom.
Note; If you continue straight a paved trail circles the park bringing you back to Parking Lot 1.
Turn right between the statue and a playing field to a gap in the fence and you'll come to the start of the Jones Beach Bikeway at 0.5 miles. Map Board located here. Informational signs located along the trail. The paved trail leaves the park and soon travels alongside the Wantagh State Pkwy. There are several different mileage markers painted on the trail. The trail is out in the open. You'll cross Wantagh Bridge over Island Creek at 1.8 miles. Wide open views of Seamans Island to your left and Olivers Channel to your right. Travel along Great Island before another bridge takes you across Goose Creek at 3 miles, then along Green Island. A final bridge at 3.7 miles takes you over to Jones Beach State Park. Next you'll pass by a parking lot for the Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre (open air theatre) and through a parking lot for Jones Beach SP. Pass by a concession stand and playground and you'll come to a tunnel on your right at 5.4 miles and the end of the Jones Beach Bikeway.
Note; Right through the tunnel (underneath Ocean Pkwy) leads to the Jones Beach & Boardwalk. Bikes are not allowed on the boardwalk.
Note; Left leads to the playground and Zack's Bay.
Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway:
The paved, open Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway (Re-zeroing Mileage) continues straight just below Ocean Pkwy on your right. I haven't checked out this section. After passing by a second tunnel leading to Jones Beach & Boardwalk the trail then travels alongside Ocean Pkwy. After 3.8 miles you come to a spur for Tobay Beach. The trail continues east passing by a spur to Gilgo Beach at 5.9 miles. Next you'll pass by Coast Guard Cove & Hemlock Cove before passing Cedar Beach Marina at 8.8 miles. Finally you follow aside Great South Bay on your left, travel underneath the Robert Mosses Causeway and come to Captree State Park after 13.7 miles and the end of the trail. Here you'll find a parking lot, boat basin and playground.
