Last Updated: June 01, 2023
Length: Chicopee Canal & Riverwalk; 0.2 miles (3 miles when complete)
Difficulty: Easy. Paved trail.
Directions:
From I-391 take exit 3 to Route 116 south. Cross over the Chicopee River and come to Front St. The trail is on your right, but it is a one-way street, so turn right on Front St, left on Cabot St, left on Exchange St and left again on Center St. Bear right on Route 116 N and you'll see a parking area across Front St.
The Chicopee Canal & Riverwalk follows a former rail bed along the Cabotville Canal that fed off the Chicopee River. Built by the Springfield Canal Company in 1832.
Starting from the Front Street parking area; The paved trail is currently only 0.2 miles long, travels and ends at Grape St. It follows the Cabotville Canal east and has informational signs describing the canals history. Old brick mills all along the canal.
Note; Check out the Chicopee River from the Route 116 bridge and the large historic Sycamore trees next to the trailhead.
Phase 2 will extend the trail 1 mile east from Grape St to Front St and the entrance to Szot Park. Under design in 2023. Phase 3 would continue the trail northeast past the former Uniroyal site to the River Mills Senior Center by Deady Memorial Bridge.
