The Naugatuck River Greenway is a planned 44 mile trail running north from Derby to Torrington along the Naugatuck River, with a short section along the Housatonic River between Derby and Shelton. This trail is a work in progress and currently contains many gaps. See; Naugatuck River Greenway for more information. The Central Section currently includes 2 short sections in the towns of Beacon Falls & Naugatuck. For more information visit; NAUGATUCK RIVER .
WATERBURY SECTION:
Phase 1 slated to start construction in 2020.
NAUGATUCK SECTION:
Starting from Linden Park; The paved trail begins near the park entrance where you'll find a nice promenade over looking the Naugatuck River, alongside an informational and map board. The trail continues through the park above the river passing by a skateboard park, ball courts and playground. More informational signs are scattered along the trail. A Porto-potty is located next to the playground.
Note; At 0.4 miles a trail on your right loops back through the park.
The trail then leaves the park behind and travels just below Route 8 before coming to a pedestrian bridge across the river.
Note; A narrow path to your right takes you underneath Route 8 and out to Main St.
Crossing the iron General Pulaski Bridge brings you over to Bridge St at 0.7 miles. Future plans call for continuing the trail north along the western side of the river.
Another section is in the planning process.
BEACON FALLS SECTION:
Starting from Volunteer Park; A promenade overlooks the Naugatuck River, along with a few informational signs. Head back out to Main St and turn right. Currently you'll need to ride on-road or on the wide sidewalk down to Depot St and Veterans Park.
Note; I recommend a detour right to the 1935 green trestle bridge over the river. Nice views. This will also bring you to the Beacon Falls Metro Station .
A crosswalk over Depot St brings you to the paved trail as it travels between the river and Main St at 0.2 miles. After 0.5 miles the trail currently ends next to a cross-light over Main St to Bethany Rd.
