Difficulty: Easy. Flat paved trails.
Directions:
Take Exit 33 off I-95/Route 128 to Great Plain Ave and travel east. Great Plain Ave becomes Needham St. Turn left onto the VFW Pkwy. Take your first left on Charles Park Rd and continue straight on Gardner St. Cross over the RR tracks and enter the park. There are multiple parking lots. I kept left twice, traveling parallel to the RR tracks to the Canoe Launch parking lot.
Millennium Park is built atop the former Gardner Street Landfill and was covered with dirt from Boston's "Big Dig". This 350 acre park is full of sport fields, a picnic area, has a canoe launch for the Charles River and contains 3 levels of paved paths encircling it. The Millennium Park; Outer Loop partially travels alongside Saw Mill Brook and is the longest Loop. The Mezzanine; Middle Loop travels around the sport fields atop the park. The Skyline; Upper Loop, which Loops around Field C, is the shortest Loop. There is also a Nature Trail that travels partially alongside the Charles River. Millennium Park; Outer Loop:
From the Canoe Launch parking lot; From the Western End of the parking lot (turn around) the paved Millennium Park; Outer Loop travels West. Map Board. You'll quickly pass by the Canoe Launch on your left, before coming to the Nature Trail entrance on your left.
Note; The Nature Trail travels West, along the Charles River, before turning East, along Sawmill Brook, returning to the Millennium Park; Outer Loop after 0.3 miles.
Pass by the Nature Trail exit, as the trail turns Northeast, along the outer edge of the park and alongside Sawmill Brook. After passing by a Connector Path (Connects to Mezzanine; Middle Loop) on your right, you'll come to a dirt path on your left at 0.4 miles, that leads to a wooden bridge.
Note; This is part of the Blue Heron Trail, which utilizes Millennium Park as part of its large Loop around Cutler Park Reservation .
The trail then turns East, bringing you to another Connector Path (Connects to Mezzanine; Middle Loop) at 0.7 miles. Bear left, where the trail turns South, past the Football Stadium, bringing you to the Park Road. The trail continues West, alongside the road. Come to an intersection with the Mezzanine; Middle Loop and a crosswalk.
Note; Straight leads to another parking lot.
Continue across the road, along the combined Millennium Park; Outer Loop & Mezzanine; Middle Loop to another intersection.
Note; The Mezzanine; Middle Loop continues straight.
Bear left, returning to the Canoe Launch parking lot after a 1.4 mile Loop.
Mezzanine; Middle Loop:
From the Canoe Launch parking lot; From the Eastern End of the parking lot the paved Millennium Park; Outer Loop brings you up to an *Intersection. Continue straight, East, along the combined Millennium Park; Outer Loop & Mezzanine; Middle Loop to an intersection.
Note; A Connector Path left, West, leads to the Skyline; Upper Loop.
Continue right, West, to a crosswalk over the park road and another intersection.
Note; Left leads to a parking lot.
Continue right, where the Millennium Park; Outer Loop splits right. Bear left, around Field A, as the trail turns North, past another parking lot and past a Connector Path on your left (Connects to a parking lot and playground). Continue past Fields B4 & B5 to another Connector Path on your right at 0.5 miles (Connects to Millennium Park; Outer Loop), where the trail turns West, past Field B6. Pass by another Connector Path on your left (Connects to a parking lot and playground) before the trail splits.
Note; A Connector Path right, leads to the Millennium Park; Outer Loop .
Continue straight. The trail then Loops West, back to *Intersection. Turn right, West, back to the Canoe Launch parking lot after a 1.3 mile Loop.
