Length: Kress Family Trail; 2.1 miles
Difficulty: Easy. Flat, hard packed dirt, grass and gravel rail trail. Some short trap rock sections.
To Start from the Botsford Hill Road parking lot ; From the junction of Routes 67 & 317 and Wellers Bridge Rd in Roxbury head west along Wellers Bridge Rd. This will bring you to Route 67 (Baker Rd). Turn left and take your first left on Botsford Hill Rd. Gravel parking lot on your left.
The Kress Family Trail is part of the Orzech Family Preserve and follows the old Shepaug, Litchfield & Northern Railroad along the Shepaug River. This was a short independent RR that was chartered as the Shepaug Valley Railroad in 1868 and operated from 1872 to 1891 when it was taken over by the Housatonic Railroad. In 1898, the Housatonic operation was assumed by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (NH). As the Litchfield Division of the NH, the line was operated until abandonment in 1948. For more information visit; ORZECH FAMILY PRESERVE .
Starting from the Botsford Hill Road parking lot; Map Board located here. Left of map board spot the stone arched RR bridge over Hop Brook. The hard packed dirt and gravel Kress Family Trail travels alongside the Shepaug River on your left. Very scenic. Wooded. You'll encounter a short trap rock section at 0.8 miles. Come to Volunteers Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses the river at 1 mile. Leads to hiking trails. A second pedestrian bridge is just up the trail. Travel through a couple of small rock cuts where the trail now consists of hard packed dirt, grass and gravel as you leave the river behind. After 2.1 miles the old rail bed disappears into the woods. A dirt path right leads up to a field (this is part of the hiking trails).
Note; The map shows the old rail bed continuing south to Minor Bridge Rd, but it has not been cleared.
