Length:                       Chicopee State Park Trail; 2.6 mile Loop.

Difficulty:                   Moderate. Paved trail. Some hilly sections (a bit steep for small kids on bikes).

Directions:

From I-90 (Mass Pike), take exit 51. Then take a right onto Burnett Rd just after the toll booth. From I-291, head north to the end at the toll plaza entrance. Continue straight onto Burnett Rd instead of turning right towards the toll lanes. Travel a ½ mile up Burnett Rd to the park entrance on your left. When you pass the gate house, continue straight to the parking lots. Left brings you to the overflow lots. A parking fee is collected during the summer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day). The park is only open 8am-6pm during the off season, later during the summer. To park outside the Park; There is a Duncan Donuts plaza alongside Burnett Rd and a sidewalk to the Park entrance. About a ½ mile to the parking lot from the plaza.

Chicopee State Park, formerly the Cooley Brook Reservoir and Watershed has been developed as a high use active recreation area. The total acreage is 575 acres including a 25 acre pond. Activities include swimming, fishing and picnicking. A paved Trail travels through the park. For more information visit; CHICOPEE STATE PARK .

From the Chicopee State Park parking lots [Eastern End]; Exit the parking lots to a sign board located near the entrance to the picnic & pavilion area (Porto-Potty), which is located among a Scotch Pine forest. The Chicopee State Park Trail begins on your left, utilizing a park road (closed to traffic). Travel West, past the beach area of Chicopee Reservoir and several paved trails on your left, that lead up to the overflow parking lots. Pass by the Bath House and pick up a wide, paved trail along the reservoir. Pass by the dam on your right (nice spot to sit and watch planes fly overhead as the come in for a landing at Westover AF base). The trail travels down to a Bridge over Cooley Brook, below the dam at 0.6 miles. After crossing the Bridge head left, North, along the Loop Trail. You ascend a ¼ mile hill through deep woods, before leveling out. The hilly trail winds through the woods, traveling East, under some power lines at 1 mile. Westover Air Force Base and its runway, will be on your left. We encountered lots of planes taking off just above us. Quite a sight. The trail turns South, taking you high above the reservoir. A couple of dirt paths lead to some overlooks. A long steep hill descends through a sharp S curve. This will bring you back to the Bridge at 2 miles. Return East, back to the parking lot after a 2.6 mile Loop.
